VNIT and Minex ink a MoU


Minex Metallurgical Co Ltd, Andheri (E), Mumbai signed a Memorandum of Understanding, on Monday 17th February, with the Department of Metallurgical & Materials Engineering, VNIT, Nagpur.

Minex India, incorporated in 1981,  is India’s foremost speciality alloys company, with wide capabilities, catering to iron & steel industry, foundries, aluminum, copper as well as welding industry. The company currently has @97% market share in cored wire injection system, Over 40% share in specialty alloys, and 90% share in cored wires.

The Department of Metallurgical & Materials Engineering (MME), one of the oldest departments of VNIT, has a strong presence in the area of R&D on the national level. The department currently has number of ongoing research projects amounting to about Rs. 20 crores. The list of the ongoing projects include the ones from Indira Gandhi Center for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Kalpakkam, Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences (BRNS) and Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE) etc.

The Department of MME, has one of the best characterization facility in the country which includes, Scanning Electron Microscopes (SEMs), XRD, Creep testing machines, High Cycle Fatigue (HCF) testing facility, Small Punch Creep testing machine etc.

The objective of the MoU is to promote

  • an institutional linkage between VNIT and Minex and to explore avenues for possible using the facilities at VNIT and
  • Research, training and internship Industrial projects of B.Tech/ M.Tech/ PhD students broadly in the area of engineering and technology

The MoU was signed by Prof. P. M. Padole, Director VNIT and Mr. David Lawrence, Plant Head, Minex Metallurgical Co. Ltd. Nagpur.

Dr. Pallavi Deshmukh is the coordinator on behalf of Minex Metallurgical Co. Ltd. Whereas, Dr. Jatin Bhatt, Associate Professor (MME) and Associate Dean (Industry Institute Interaction) is the coordinator from VNIT.

The event was attended by the officers of Minex Mr. Yadav, Head (Production), Mr. Parse, Manager (QC). From VNIT, the persons present were Prof. D.R. Peshwe, Dean (FW), Prof. Borghate, Dean (R&C), Prof. Thombre, Dean (Acad), Prof. Sathey, Registrar, Prof. A. P. Patil, Head (MME) and Dr. Ajay Likhite, Associate Dean (PR).
