Brief Bio
Dr. Udit Jain is an Assistant Professor at Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT) Nagpur, India, which is an Institute of National Importance under the aegis of the Ministry of Education (MoE), Govt. of India. He did his PhD in Transportation Engineering from IIT Roorkee on Pedestrian Safety and formulated guidelines for the selection of pedestrian crossing facilities at mid-block crosswalks. The work carried out by him on pedestrian crosswalks has been incorporated in the Indian Highway Capacity Manual 2017 (Indo-HCM) and the pedestrian crosswalk warrant criteria will be a part of the latest revision of IRC-103, Indian Guidelines for Pedestrian Facilities. He was also the recipient of the Ministry of Education (MoE) fellowship (by the Govt. of India) for higher studies during 2014 – 2017. He completed his Masters from School of Planning and Architecture New Delhi in 2013 and was the Gold Medalist in Transport Planning. Dr. Jain has over 35 publications in peer-reviewed journals and various national and international conferences. He has also authored a text book titled “Traffic Engineering & Road Safety”, which has been published by Pearson. Dr. Jain has completed several sponsored R&D projects funded by organizations like CSIR-CRRI, HKA Germany, 3M India and iHub IIIT Hyderabad. He also developed a field deployable standalone device for vehicle detection, classification and kinematic data extraction. A patent for this device titled “Autonomous Traffic Monitoring and Analysis System” was granted in 2024. He is a member of different professional bodies like Indian Roads Congress (IRC), Institution of Engineers India (IEI) and Institute of Town Planners (ITPI). His research interests are in the field of Road Safety, Pedestrian Facility Planning, Intersection Design, Integration of Transportation modes and Sustainable Transport Planning. He is also a certified Road Safety Auditor and has completed international and national certification courses in Road Safety from Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), Netherlands and IIT Roorkee respectively. He has carried out several road safety audit works in the state of Punjab and Maharashtra. He has also organized two 15-Days Road Safety Auditor Certification Courses at VNIT Nagpur in association with the Indian Roads Congress and the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (Govt. of India).
