Research Interest

Research Interest
Area of interest: Power electronics, Grid interfaced inverter, Microgrid operation, drives, FACTS, Power Quality etc.
Research contribution: An improved synchronous vector control of multi-level inverter for ac grid is developed, for integration of DG resources to the power grid. The proposed control algorithm i. compensated the total reactive power required by the local load and increases utilization of the grid interfaced multilevel inverter. ii. Improved the utilization of the grid interfaced inverter to inject DG power. iii. Provided fast dynamic response. iv. Supply load harmonic current components.  This is achieved through a) Development of a grid monitoring system for monitoring and measurement. b) Implementation of the proposed Dynamic Reference point (DRP) control algorithm. c) Determination of the stable region of the proposed DG system by using Synchronous Space curves (SSC) and d) Development of Optimized Space Vector Pulse with Modulation control method in the nested-loop of grid connected configuration. Study of Intelligent Controllers for Power Electronic ConvertersAn Intelligent controller is designed for controlling a single phase Power Electronic Inverter using Neuro-Evolutionary techniques. It is observed that the governing equations for harmonic voltage control of a single phase inverter are transcendental, non-linear in nature. With multiple variables, their complexity increases and they cannot be solved as a simple set of simultaneous equations using conventional numerical techniques like Newton-Raphson method. The intelligent techniques like Evolutionary Programming and Artificial Neural Network are adopted to tackle this problem. The inverter is triggered such that the output pulses are positioned around the pulse-positions given by Intelligent Controller. The MATLAB simulation results show that resulting voltage has better quality with higher fundamental voltage and less harmonic contents. This output voltage is fed to a single phase Induction motor. The running performance of motor has improved in terms of torque. Thus, Intelligently controlled inverter results in better load performance with higher output for same input parameters, consequently reducing the device ratings and cost for similar performance.  A multi-input buck-boost converter (MIBBC) with asymmetrical input sources is analyzed and the operation of the MIBBC in buck, boost, and buck-boost mode is verified experimentally. The small signal analysis and transfer functions of the MIBBC. The input sources and the load are isolated throughout the operation of the MIBBC without using transformer. The continuity in power supply to the load is maintained with the desired output voltage during sudden disconnection of one of the main sources, which proves the reliability of the MIBBC. A Multi-Input converter (MIC) which has the capability to transfer energy from one of the sources to the energy storage source (ESS) with improved reliability is proposed. A diode in the MIBBC is replaced by a switch in the proposed MIC. The ability to transfer energy from one of the sources to the ESS with less number of switches in the energy transfer path is the merit of the proposed MIC. MIC which has the ability to transfer power in either direction with improved reliability i.e. it operates in two quadrants. The novelty of this research work is that the proposed TQC gives transformer less isolation between sources and the load, has the ability to transfer power in either direction (bidirectional) with improved reliability.Experimental prototype is developed with Two UC banks each of 500 F, 16.2 V as ESSs. Each bank consists of six BCAP 3000 F, 2.7 V UCs connected in series, whereas charging source can be a renewable energy (solar) source. Thedeveloped experimentalwork with less part counts is suitable in the applications of hybrid electric or renewable energy systems.  The nine switch ac-dc-ac converter (NSC) for reactive power compensation with induction motor load is developed. It is studied that NSC with ac-ac CF has relatively lower losses when compared to twelve switch converter (TSC). Mathematical proof is presented with the derivation of the particular operating parameter for which the NSC will have comparatively lower losses. Induction motors used for various industrial applications operate with lagging power factor. A closed loop control scheme is developed to operate NSC at a desired input power factor while an induction motor operating under dynamic loading condition. The control scheme is developed such that the active power required for the induction motor is directly given by the source without affecting DC-link voltage. Also, the NSC with induction motor is operated at unity as well as a leading power factor. By operating the NSC at a desired leading power factor, the required reactive power at the point of common coupling (PCC) is compensated. The analysis of the proposed reactive power compensator is presented in the d-q reference frame. The control logic is implemented in a digital signal controller dsPIC33EP250MU810 to generate desired gate pulses. The NSC is fabricated using discreet switches (IGBT KGT25N120NDH). The driver circuit is designed with optocoupler IC 6N137 and bipolar driver IC MIC4425. To track the instantaneous angle of the utility synchronous reference frame phase lock loop (SRF-PLL) is implemented. The LV-20P voltage sensors are used to measure utility phase voltages and dc-link voltage. The signal conditioning circuit is made to interface voltage sensor output and DSC controller. The LA-25A current sensor is used to measure input-output power continuously. The printed circuit board (PCB) of the DSC controller, driver circuitry, power circuit, signal conditioning is designed and developed. The 5 kVA prototype is developed in the laboratory. The software and hardware results confirmed the practicability of the proposed control technique. The main goal of this research is to develop a proper temperature regulated battery charging strategy with certain objectives such as optimizing the charging time, improve the battery life/health, avoid voltage stress, and regulate the battery temperature for the safe operation of electric vehicles. Electro-chemical model, mathematical model, and equivalent electric model of a battery is developed. Temperature regulated pulse charging strategy is implemented experimentally on the set-up of 150 W battery charging system. It has been verified that by controlling the terminal voltage and state of charge 4-step charging profile reduces the charging time to 3.6 hrs as compared to normal C/10 charging which takes 10 hrs to charge the battery. Model validation by voltage response test is carried out for charging/discharging behavior. The tested result matches the model results with a maximum error of 0.4% during discharging and 0.6% during discharging.
