M. Tech Excavation Engineering
M.Tech. (Excavation and Tunnel Engineering):- Scope and application to Industry
The department offers a PG course, M.Tech. (Excavation and Tunnel Engineering), which is available to Civil, Construction, and Mining Engineering graduates (GATE / Non-GATE Candidates).
Vision:
To maintain the standard of mining education and commitment for basic research and applied research in the diverse fields of mining, excavation engineering and other interdisciplinary areas and continuously striving to be recognized internationally for education, research and service to the mining and allied industry.
Mission :
To create an environment conducive to attaining professional competence in the field of Mining Engineering and to provide specialised training to develop need-based human resources, while fostering commitment among students and staff to academic, social, and professional development.
SCOPE OF EXCAVATION AND TUNNEL ENGINEERING
The excavation industry has seen exponential growth in India in the last decade, concerning excavations in soil and rock strata. The prime areas where it is required are:
Slope engineering, tunnel engineering, underground space technology, underground waterways, caverns for power houses, foundations for high-rise buildings, railways, metros, soil exploration, environmental restoration, dam foundation excavation and also development of rapid transit, parking, utilities, sewage and water-treatment plants, fluid storage, warehouses, surface mines, underground mines.
Some of the problems tackled by excavation engineers are in the areas of deep excavations, excavations in fragile and mountainous regions, excavations and tunneling in urban areas, utilization of underground space in urban areas for storage, waste disposal and habitats, reduction in excavation costs, management of excavations, and making mining ores and building materials profitable and sustainable.
Professionals trained in the above areas are essential to meet the challenges and contribute effectively in this nation-building activity.
Engineers, upon completion of this course, are expected to provide input to enhance their engineering knowledge in the fields of excavation and tunnel engineering, sub-surface space technology, and mining, which will be useful in serving the construction and mining industry in the most technically and economically effective way.
Objectives of the PG course:
- To train students at the postgraduate level in the area of excavation engineering, slope designs, sub-surface road designs, mechanized drivages and blasting methods, and produce professionals to serve the challenges of the huge excavation industry in the country and abroad.
- To generate new knowledge and enhance the economy, productivity and safety of the excavation industry, including tunnelling, mining, and underground space technology.
This PG Course is designed with the following curriculum content. Students are imparted with knowledge and trained to cater for the needs of excavation and the related construction industry:
