VNIT Nagpur Promotes Holistic Wellness, Mindfulness and a Substance-Free Life Among Freshers

Nagpur, 21st August 2026: The third day of the First-Year Orientation Programme commenced with another rejuvenating yoga session, conducted by members of Shri Janardan Swami Yogabhyasi Mandal. The session focused on promoting physical well-being, mental relaxation, and mindfulness among the students. The students participated enthusiastically and thoroughly enjoyed the session, making it a refreshing and energetic start to the day.

The first session was conducted by Dr. Bhushan Kumar Upadhyay, IPS (Retd.), former Director General of Police and Commandant General, Home Guards, Maharashtra, and a renowned Mind Management Expert.

The session focused on stress management and emotional intelligence, with Dr. Upadhyay sharing practical techniques to help students manage stress, maintain emotional balance, improve self-awareness, and develop healthier interpersonal relationships. A significant part of the session drew upon concepts associated with Daniel Goleman’s influential book, Emotional Intelligence, which emphasises the importance of emotional competencies alongside conventional intellectual abilities.

Dr. Upadhyay’s talk highlighted key dimensions such as self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills. The session encouraged students to recognise that academic success is not determined by intellectual ability alone, but also by their capacity to understand their emotions, manage stress, respond constructively to challenges, empathise with others, and build positive relationships.

The discussion was particularly relevant for first-year students as they begin a new phase of academic and personal life, and encouraged them to develop emotional resilience and effective coping strategies alongside their technical education.

The second session was conducted by BK Shiv Lal Bhai, Brahma Kumari’s, and focused on the important themes of drug-free living, digital wellness, mindfulness, and mental well-being.

The session was primarily centred on creating awareness among students about the harmful effects of substance abuse and the importance of making responsible and healthy choices. The discussion was closely aligned with the objectives of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan (NMBA), a Government of India initiative aimed at creating awareness about substance use, particularly among young people and students. The Abhiyaan places specific emphasis on educational institutions, youth participation, preventive education, awareness generation, counselling and community engagement

The session provided an important message that maintaining a healthy and balanced lifestyle requires awareness not only of substance-related addictions but also of behavioural and digital habits. Students were encouraged to develop self-discipline, mindfulness, positive thinking and responsible decision-making as essential components of a healthy and fulfilling life.

The session was followed by an oath on Nasha Mukti towards building a healthy, mindful and substance-free campus community.

In the second half of the day, students participated in an engaging Radio Jockey (RJ) activity, learning about voice modulation, pitch, tone, and expressions. They explored how even a 15-second audio clip can effectively convey an advertisement or a humorous or serious story. The music session helped students connect everyday experiences and emotions with songs and lyrics, highlighting music as a means of expression and emotional well-being. Overall, the sessions fostered creativity, communication, collaboration, and emotional awareness while encouraging students to step out of their comfort zones.

The day concluded on a melodious note with “Rishton Ka Manja,” a captivating musical programme that provided an enjoyable and refreshing experience for the students. The soulful performances created a lively atmosphere and brought the day’s activities to a memorable close.
